Part 3: Marika and The Royal Family.
Not much is known about the origin of Marika, saved that she was a “Numen”, humans who, according to the game “ are a race of beings descended from otherworldly travelers. Long lived and seldom born…” celestial blood means little, however, if it’s not properly put to use.
It is never really specified why she was chosen by the greater will, however what we do get to know is that it wasn’t by chance. She earned her title, maybe (and if we connect the basic name sake) through sheer force and strength of will. All that we know is that she wasted no time getting to work, for once Marika was in possession of the Elden Ring, she plucked out death from the equation:
“The Rune of Death goes by two names; the other is Destined Death. The forbidden shadow, plucked from the Golden Order upon its creation…” – Finger Reader Enia
With this simple act, Marika had turned the Greater Will’s order into a new Golden Order, one that, along her new goddess, would be a bright beacon of light and hope for those under it, and dread for those against it. And Marika became Queen Marika the Immortal. The Kingdom of Leyndell would be built upon the base of the tree, and a new era of Gold began.
But every kingdom has it’s enemies and wars to fight. Marika could handle the politics and the faith, but she needed a strong and reliable hand to command their armies and crush any opposition against the new order of the world. Enter Hoarah Loux, a cunning, strong and fierce warrior, who’s rage and ferocity in battle preceded him since before the arrival of the Elden Beast.
Who better to show the world the might of The Golden Order than a legendary warrior, domesticated and turned into the husband of the new goddess and into the head of their military.
And he did. Hoarah Loux, now know as Godfrey, The First Elden Lord, was unforgiving in the battlefield. However, Godfrey was now a lord and as such he needed suppress his bloodthirsty nature. To suppress his blood lust, Godfrey took upon his back a Lion named Serosh as beast regent. The beast would hold all his bloodlust and he would unleash said beast in times of need.
Godfrey had three children with Marika: Godwyn the Golden and the twin omens, Mohg and Morgott. For many years did Godfrey serve, in countless battles back to back, winning nearly all of them, save a handful. The Stormlords, The Giants and the dragons all fell by the hands of Godfrey and his Golden Army, delivering the force of The Greater Will against any who would be a threat to the Elden Ring and the Erdtree. Eventually however, they met a stalemate, not once but twice, against the Carian Royals and their schools of Glint Sorcery.
A peace treaty was eventually made however when the head of the Carian nobles, Queen Rennala, fell in love with a champion of the Golden Order’s armada, called Radagon after a clash in battle. Miriel, the giant pope turtle, says the following of the event:
“Radagon once cleansed himself with celestial dew, repented his territorial aggressions, and swore his love to Rennala. The Order of the Erdtree and the fate of the moon were conjoined, and all the wounds of war forgiven.” -Miriel, Pastor of Vows
The two would proceed to have three children together called Radagon, Rykar and Ranni. Names with which all players would be familiar, for eventually something would happen that would rise them from mere nobles to demigods themselves.
However, not long after all the wars and battling was over did Godfrey felt something change. His grace, the grace given to him from the Erdtree, as well as his divine power as demi god had been stripped away. He was thus punished and sent to Bad Lands, along with his now called “Tarnished” warriors into an event known as the Long March. Yet whispers say that this was all planned by Marika herself, as the very air in Leyndell had changed.
Not long after, Radagon left his beloved Rennala and took the place of Elden Lord and husband to Marika, to the surprise of all those who watched from below. Meriel says in his dialogue:
“The mystery endures, to this day… As to why Lord Radagon would cast Lady Rennala aside… and moreover…why a mere champion would be chosen for the seat of Elden Lord”.
Yet even then, Radagon and Marika had 2 more children: Miquella and Melania.
Yet soon after, it happened…
Marika shattered the Elden Ring. Some speculate that it was because she wanted to learn more, about it, the beast and the Greater will. Others attribute it to rebellion against the Greater Will, others say that she saw a flaw in her Golden Order and started harboring doubts about the legitimacy of her “eternal” reign. Whatever the reason, neither her nor Radagon were seen by anyone again.
And as chaos unraveled, the unthinkable happened. A piece of death was stolen, and two of the demi gods died. One in body, but not soul. The other in soul while their body lived. It is believed that Ranni herself stole the fraction of death and forged with it a knife that could do the impossible and kill the demigods. However, her intent was to use it upon her physical body to transfer her soul into a doll. For what purpose? Is one we will discuss on a later post.
However, that same black knife was used against Godwyn the Golden, in a successful assassination attempt remembered as “The Night of the Black Knives.” And tho his body remain, his soul was completely destroyed, unable to return to the Erdtree and becoming the prince of living death.
As for the Elden Ring? The remaining fragments were taken by each one of the demigods who we encounter throughout the game. And, as promised by Marika herself when banishing Horoah Loux, we tarnished are called back to our ancestral home, through the fog, in The Lands Between…
Thank you for reading. It’s been a hard and long process, but this is far from over. Next Week will start with one of the main endings of the game, so I hope you’ve enjoyed and hope to see you next time.
